The Mallorcan oceansailors filled the Sala Magna of the RCNP

The Sala Magna of the Real Club Náutico de Palma filled up with assistents for the conference offered by Toni Nicolau, Rafa Bestard, Sinto Bestard, Xisco Estarellas and Guillermo Martí, the only Mallorcan sailors to sail around the world out of competition and Bubi Sansó (Vendée Globe) and Hugo Ramón (Global Ocean Race).

The conference given by the Asociación de Navegantes Mediterráneo (ADN), together with the support of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, gathered close to 300 sailing enthusiasts from all over Mallorca.

The five speakers all agreed that the most difficult momento is when you finally depart from the harbour, casting off the mooring lines.

Toni Nicolau is the only one who sailed around the world alone on board his boat "Encis", (a Visier 35') with which he experienced all kind of real sensations that have become very important for him for the rest of his life.

Rafa Bestard and his blind father, Sinto decided to cross the Atlantic on Snooty Fox, (an Oyster 55) in a much more calm way, filling up their wine cellar with good local wine and making stop overs as in Brazil to enjoy and experience the carnivals.

Guillermo Martí decided to set off and sail during his convalescense at the hospital, after having suffered a mountain accident. During his recuperation he read “¡Eh, petrel!”, a poetic book that the author, Julio Villar, wrote during his round the world sail on board his small boat of six meters and a half.
Martí took off from La Ràpita on board Gipsy – a 36 footer– together with his wife, Manoli Oliver, and his two year old son achieving to sail up to Australia. The rest of the journey, Marti sailed alone, fortunately as he explains, "I suffered some very difficult moments in Yemen and in Saudi Arabia". Manoli, his wife asked Carmen Nadal to put words into this first half of the round the world journey and published her book entitled "Izando mi corazón".

Xisco Estarellas, known as Capitán Tormenta, (Storm Captain) asked his son who had recently obtained his marine degree to sail around the world with him and departed in less tan 15 days on board his boat of 11 meters "Shira".

Estarellas ensures his boat was always ready to set sail, and their journey proved to be full of amazing stories, all captured in the book written by his son called, “Tormentas, piratas y tiburones”. Capitán Tormenta, is an honorary member of the Real Club Náutico de Palma, and is proud to have sailed around the world without electronic instruments.

Teresa Palmer, Delegate of the Balearic Government, handed out a diploma to all the speakers, and thanked all the assistants and specially the representants of different institutions, General Director of Ports and Airports, Antonio Deudero, and the Presidents of ADN, Biel Morell; of the RCNP, Javier Sanz, and the Asociación de Clubes Náuticos de Baleares, Miguel Suñer, amongst others.
