The regatta organised by the Real Club Náutico de Palma will gather sailors from 18 countries from the 6th to the 9th December. Four of the top ten at the Optis Worlds will take part in the regatta this year.

The 68 Trofeo Ciutat de Palma Bufete Frau will gather from the 6th to the 9th and in the bay of Palma, more than 400 sailors from 18 different countries. This event organized by the RCNP since 1950 has established a record of participating countries in this edition. The Optimist (300 participants) 420, Laser and Europe classes have been invited for this occasion.
Vivi Mainemare, sports coordinator of the RCNP, explains “we are very happy with this years diversity of countries that have entered the Ciutat de Palma”. These 18 countries, mostly in the Optimist class, have the opportunity to sail in Palma de Mallorca whereas they cannot in their countries, due to the very cold weather conditions. “And we are also delighted with the fidelity some countries show for this regatta, such as the German, Danish or Polish fleets,” points out Mainemare
The local world champion María Perelló, (Club Náutico Arenal), will welcome some of the best optimist sailors at present. Amongst this international fleet you can find in this edition sailors such as Richard Schultheis from Malta (fourth place at the worlds), the American Tommy Sitzmann (fifth at the worlds),Mic Mohr from Germany (sixth) and the Greek, Dimitris Bitros(seventh place). “ The high level of this year shows the effort carried out by the sailors and the international associations, gathering a fleet that can easily be of a European Championship.
The other classes will gather - Laser 4.7 a fleet of 45 participants, 36 boats in this years invited class, the Europe and around ten 420’s. “it is exciting for the organizing committee to receive the Europe Class after so many years of absence in the Ciutat de Palma”, Vivi explains.
José Carlos Frau, founder and member of Bufete Frau, sponsor of the Trofeo Ciutat de Palma, admits to be “enthusiastic about the regatta” in his second year and the main sponsor of this regatta. Frau, also finished in second place in the Optimist and Europe classes world championship some time ago, and points out, “sailing naturally teaches you the value of effort and respect for environment”.
With the Ciutat de Palma, the RCNP presents the “Green Regatta Project” reminding how dangerous is the garbage that is thrown into the seas, especially plastic, representing an 80 % of the earth’s pollution. Manu Fraga, the sports director insists on, having a more environmental friendly organization and hopes all the young sailors will collaborate with us and help protect and respect our nature.
