07 December, 2018    |    Dinghy Sailing

Richard (fourth of the World ranking) wins the two first races held in the Optimist class. Marc Mesquida (Mallorca) follows with only 1 point difference. Nice sunny day and good stard out on the water for this important Balearic sports competition.

The sailor from Malta Richard Schultheis, 4th of the world, placed himself leader of the Optimist overall classification after the first day’s competition of the 68 Trofeo Ciutat de Palma Bufete Frau organised by the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP). The local sailor, Marc Mesquida, from the Club Nàutic S’Arenal, finishes in second place followed by Thomas Sitzmann from USA and fifth in the latest Opti worlds.

Schultheis won both races in his group and is followed by only one point by Mesquida, who has sailed really well and places him amongst the best Opti sailors of the World ranking. Mic Mohr (sixth at the world ranking) and María Perelló, girls world champion in 2017 and 2018, are in 4th and 5th place. The rest of the classes are provisionally lead by Laura Homar and Mar Fuster (Club Náutic Arenal) in the 420 class, Alejandro Pareja (Club Náutico de Torrevieja) in Europe Class and Isidro Codoñer (Real Club Náutico de Valencia) in Laser 4.7.

Racing will carry on tomorrow and on Sunday, where the organizing committee expects the wind to increase up to 20 knots.

WEATHER FORECAST

At the beginning of the day the Bahía de Palma looked like a mirror. The 65 coaches were not to optimistic, but slowly saw how the forecast given by the organizing committee became true and wind came in to fill up to 8/11 knots from the southwest. The Optis sailed two of the three programed races and the rest of the classes (420, Laser 4.7 and Europe) sailed three.

HOT RED GROUP

The different number of boats on the starting line did not make it easy to complete de same number of races on both courses. The Laser, 420 and Europe started with a bit more of order with only one general recall, whilst the Optimist experienced some hot moments during the starting procedures.  Some of the general recalls turned out into 40 BFDs until the red group finally had a clear start.

QUOTES FROM:

Richard Schultheis (Malta) leader in the Opti: “I loved the conditions out there, is has been sunny and have had 10/12 knots. The wave in the Bahía de Palma is short and makes sailing a bit complicated, but conditions are very similar to the ones in Malta.

Thomas Sitzmann (USA), third place in the Opti: “ I started really well in the first race and won it. In the second race in started late but finally finished fifth. I sailed well and finished fifth. The Ciutat de Palma is a good competition. Mallorca is a nice place and the club is fantastic. The 300 participating boats, makes it a great regatta to be at. My aim is to sail the best I can. I only want to sail well and whatever is the result, I will keep on working hard”.
