The event organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma will count on four of the TOP 10 sailors of the past Opti World Champiionship.

The 68 Trofeo Ciutat de Palma Bufete Frau, to be held from the 6 to the 9 of December, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP), aims to be one of the best editions of the past years. Not only for the number of entries, but also due to the quality of the Optimist fleet.
Four of the top ten sailors, at the last Opti Worlds, will be present in this next edition, as well as the first placed girl, Maria Perello from the Club Nautico el Arenal, Mallorca.
Vivi Mainemare, sports coordinator of the RCNP, is pleased to announce that Richard Schultheis from Malta (fourth place at the worlds), Tommy Sitzmann from USA (fifth place), Mic Mohr from Germany (sixth) and the Greek Dimitrios Bitros (seventh) have confirmed their participation. “All Top 10 have been invited to our regatta. We are very happy with the response of these four sailors which will give the regatta a very high level of participation”.
Manu Fraga, director of the event and sports director of the RCNP, explains how the organizing committee is focused on improving the quality of the participants and making it popular amongst the best Opti sailors. “This is why we have chosen the latest Opti world championship held in Cyprus in August”. In fact, Manu Fraga thinks that, to have these 4 sailors in the Top 10 and the best girl of the world, is a real impulse for the rest of the sailors. It is a really good opportunity for the local sailors to sail against the best international Opti sailors. Manu concludes; “I think the 68 Trofeo Ciutat de Palma will be a real luxury this year.”
The 68 Trofeo Ciutat de Palma Bufete Frau has invited the following classes to take part this year: Optimist, 420, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and Europe. There will be 1 registration confirmation day (6th December, which is a national holiday in Spain) and 3 racing days from the 7th to the 9th of December, both included.
The Trofeo Ciutat de Palma has the institutional support of the Townhall of Palma, is sponsored by Bufete Frau, a firm of lawyers, owned by José Carlos Frau who is also a very compromised person with sailing. He actually ended in second place at the Optimist Worlds in 1983. Today he is a firm supporter of the Trofeo Ciutat de Palma and thinks it is one of the most important sailing events on the Island.
The regatta has other supporters such as the RFEV (Royal Spanish Sailing Association), FBV (Balearic Sailing Association), AECIO (Spanish Optimist Class Association), APB (Balearic Port Authority), the Club Nàutic Arenal, Trasmediterránea and Sail Racing.
The history of the Trofeo Ciutat de Palma is almost parallel to the club’s history. Its first edition was held in 1950, when the RCNP just reached its second year of age. The event has been held since then. The Snipe class has been the invited class for ages but now has been surpassed by the Optimist class, the most popular international fleet in the world for young beginners.
These 68 years of perseverance is what has lead this sports competition to be the oldest one of the Balearic Island and why not, may be considered as patrimony of Mallorca.
